“Vishing” Campaign Targeting Physicians

A “vishing” scam campaign targeting physicians was brought to our attention by the defense attorneys at one of our insurance carriers. “Vishing” is a phishing attack that utilizes voice calls (i.e., phone calls) to obtain personal and/or professional information. This particular scam consists of live incoming phone calls to physician offices in an attempt to obtain information under false pretenses. The caller will likely identify themselves as an employee of the state medical board and could even have your name and license number. However, please be aware that the typical protocol of the DPH is to contact individuals via post mail, should a licensing issue arise. We recommend that you use extreme caution when providing any information over the telephone. Always request a call-back number and verify that the number originates from a state agency.

In this vishing scam the caller identification may appear to originate from your state. The scammer may inform you that your license has been used in illegal activity and that it is under investigation. He or she may then transfer you to an “investigator” who will provide you with more misleading information, or direct you to a web portal, in an attempt to gather more of your personal information and ultimately collect money.

Please be aware of this scam and alert your office staff.
