Scott Berger, CIC, Senior Account Executive
What does Scott Berger, CIC, like best about his job? “I like helping people.”
It’s open enrollment for health insurance, and the Physicians Insurance senior account executive is busy advising physicians and practice managers who want to ensure they are enrolled in the best health insurance plans for themselves and their staff. Outside of work, he’s a busy husband and father. This week, he’s been driving his son, a budding actor, to rehearsals for two different plays rehearsing simultaneously. The community theater asked Scott, an actor and voiceover artist himself, to help run lights for its production of The Music Man. And it’s the holidays, and he and his wife are hosting family.
Scott has been in the insurance industry for more than twenty years and has been with Physicians Insurance since 2013. As a Certified Insurance Counselor, Scott is licensed in both Property and Casualty and Health and Life. This means he can place professional liability, health insurance, life and disability insurance, and commercial insurance policies, and he is the Physicians Insurance expert on Medicare supplement plans.
Health Insurance Open Enrollment
Once a year, during open enrollment, individuals and practices have the opportunity to change or re-enroll in their health insurance for any reason. Outside of the open enrollment period, enrolling in a new plan is only allowed if there is a qualifying event, such as changing or leaving a job, COBRA ending, or opening a new practice.
Finding the best option for health insurance is no easy task.
“It can be overwhelming,” Scott said. “They might be looking on the Health Connector website and seeing three different carriers with five different plans that all sound the same.”
With health insurance for small groups — under 50 people — the rate is the same whether insurance is purchased from a broker or directly from the plan. Physicians Insurance clients don’t pay more for their health insurance, but they get a lot more value and advice from a licensed Certified Insurance Counselor who understands the different options that make sense for physicians and practices, whether they’re starting out, expanding, or winding down the practice.
“I find out what they need, who they need to insure, and at what levels, and walk them through the options that meet their needs,” Scott said. “They’re so relieved.”
Medicare Supplemental Insurance
Another type of insurance that can be confusing is supplemental insurance for Medicare. Physicians who are 65 and older qualify for Medicare, whether they’re retired or still working. But Medicare doesn’t cover medical bills fully. Physicians Insurance offers Medicare supplemental insurance, sometimes called Medigap insurance, to cover the gaps that Medicare doesn’t cover, such as deductibles, coinsurance, prescriptions, and some vision and hearing costs, too.
Scott walks his clients 65 and older through those options too, finding the match between the level of coverage and the budget that’s most comfortable for the client.
And his clients are glad for the help.
“Our clients are so appreciative,” says Scott. “They know that we know what we’re talking about. They know that we go to bat for them.” That trust is what drives clients to Physicians Insurance and what keeps them coming back. Physicians Insurance has been helping health care professionals with their insurance for 30 years. Some of Scott’s clients have been with Physicians Insurance the whole time.
“They know they can call me, and I will help them.”
