Upcoming MMS CME Program on Risk Management

Reducing the Risk of Medical Errors and Mistakes

To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System, published in 1999, the Institute of Medicine defined medical errors as the failure of a planned action to be completed as intended or the use of a wrong plan to achieve an aim. That report found that adverse drug events, improper transfusions, surgical injuries and wrong-site surgery, suicides, restraint-related injuries or death, falls, burns, pressure ulcers, and mistaken patient identities are some of the most common medical errors. This course explores these common medical mistakes, studies around medical errors, and their impact on patients, safety and the practice of medicine.
